Gadis Kretek Triumphs at Seoul International Drama Awards 2024

13 September 2024 16:06 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Indonesian series Gadis Kretek, or Cigarette Girl, has clinched the Best Mini-Series award in the International Competition Program category at the prestigious Seoul International Drama Awards 2024. Competing against ten other nominees from various countries, including 3 Body Problem (United States), Moving (South Korea), The Worst of Evil (South Korea), and Daily Dose of Sunshine (South Korea), Gadis Kretek emerged as the victor.

The Seoul International Drama Awards is an annual event that honors outstanding television drama productions from around the globe. Held in Seoul, South Korea, this prestigious event recognizes excellence in the field.

Gadis Kretek Cast Expresses Gratitude and Joy

Dian Sastrowardoyo, who portrays the lead character Dasiyah or Jeng Yah, expressed her deep gratitude for this achievement. “I will forever be grateful to be a part of this success! Thank you for all your incredible support,” wrote Dian Sastro on Instagram on Thursday, September 12, 2024.

Dian Sastro's co-star, Ibnu Jamil, shared several behind-the-scenes photos from the set of Gadis Kretek. The actor, who plays the character Seno Aji, seems to be engaged in a conversation with Jeng Yah, as depicted in one of the photos he uploaded.

“Jeng Yah... I apologize for any inconvenience... I just wanted to let you know that our GADIS KRETEK Series won at the SEOUL INTERNATIONAL DRAMA AWARDS 2024. Congratulations, Jeng, and to all the cast and crew. You are all amazing,” wrote Ibnu Jamil.

The 43-year-old actor also playfully teased his favorite football club, Manchester United (MU). “I am always proud to be part of this fantastic project. When the trophy arrives, please let me know... I want to show it off to MU,” he wrote.

About Gadis Kretek

Adapted from a novel by Ratih Kumala, the Gadis Kretek series, consisting of five episodes, was directed by Kamila Andini and Ifa Isfansyah. This series, set in the 1960s cigarette industry in Indonesia, revolves around a love story and features a stellar cast including Ario Bayu, Putri Marino, Arya Saloka, Tissa Biani, Ine Febriyanti, Winky Wiryawan, Sheila Dara, Rukman Rosadi, Nungki Kusumastuti, Dimas Aditya, Pritt Timothy, and Tutie Kirana.

Since its release on Netflix on November 2, 2023, Gadis Kretek has sparked controversy. As reported by Tempo Newspaper in December 2023, the series is considered to romanticize and promote a positive image of the cigarette industry.

Additionally, Gadis Kretek is said to contribute to the spread of cigarette addiction across countries through streaming platforms, which may have minimal regulations. This is particularly concerning as the series can be viewed by all age groups, including children and teenagers, both domestically and internationally.
