The Most Preferred for Work Destination Globally, 'Workcation' Cities

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The pandemic has transformed the way we work. People are no longer tied to jobs requiring them to work from the office. Instead, they now work from various places. This is what we know as a remote and hybrid working.

Given the convenience of working from anywhere, not only from home, some people now (who dubbed themselves 'digital nomads') are doing their job while being at travel destinations. This is the so-called "workcation" (another spelling is ‘workation’, but both are acceptable), which is a combination of ‘work’ and ‘vacation’.

A research conducted by the International Workplace Group (IWG) has revealed a number of countries suitable as workcation destinations. Discover about the most preferred for work destinations globally in the following.

Best Destinations Globally for Work 

The IWG collated data on the best destinations globally for work, basing their findings on research and survey results from 1,000 hybrid workers across the globe.

They then compared 30 cities around the world, rating them on a scale of 1 to 10 in the following categories:

- Accommodation

- Availability or flexible workplaces

- Broadband speed

- Climate

- Culture

- Food

- Happiness

- Subsistence

- Sustainability

- Transport

Based on the assessment of those categories, here are the top 10 most preferred work destinations globally in the year 2024 according to the IWG:

1. Budapest, Hungaria

2. Barcelona, Spain

3. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

4. Beijing, China

5. Lisbon, Portugal

6. New York, USA

7. Singapore

8. Jakarta, Indonesia

9. Los Angeles, USA

10. Milan, Italy

On top of the list is Budapest. In addition to its array of classical buildings and adequate green spaces, the Hungarian capital offers a compelling case for digital nomads, as it scored high in the areas of accommodation (9.5/10), transportation (9.5/10), sustainability (8.5/10), and broadband speed (8/10).

Following in second position, Budapest is a strong contender for the best workcation destination. Given its high scores in transportation (9/10), accommodation (8.5/10), and climate (8.5/10), this city offers an affordable cost of living, lively atmosphere, and, the most important thing, a visa for digital nomads.

Furthermore, besides Beijing, Singapore and Jakarta, too, emerged as two of the best work destinations, especially from the Southeast Asia (SEA) region.

Singapore comes solid with its exceptional broadband speed (10/10) and sustainability (9/10). On the other hand, according to the IWG, Jakarta stands out the most for the affordability of its accommodation, transportation, as well as food and drink.
