M4.9 Earthquake Shakes North Kalimantan, Reaching Tanjung Selor, Berau

TEMPO.CO, JakartaA tectonic earthquake measuring 4.9 magnitudes struck the Bulungan area of North Kalimantan on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, at 7:01 a.m., the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported. 

The quake's epicenter was located at coordinates 2.47° N and 116.85° E, or precisely 50 kilometers southwest of Bulungan at a depth of 51 kilometers.

“It is a shallow quake caused by active fault activity in the Bulungan Regency area,” said Tony Agus Wijaya, Head of the BMKG Manado Class I Geophysics Station, in a written statement on Wednesday, August 21.

The earthquake was felt in Tanjung Selor with an intensity of III MMI, while Berau and Tana Tidung experienced intensities of II-III MMI. In Tarakan, the intensity was II MMI. There have been no reports of damage caused by the earthquake.

Tony urged the public to remain calm and avoid damaged buildings. He also advised residents to check the structural integrity of their homes before returning. For official information, he recommended relying solely on verified sources from BMKG.
