TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Director General of Railways of the Transportation Ministry, Mohamad Risal Wasal, stated that his department has conducted a study to increase the fare of the Greater Jakarta Commuter Line or KRL by Rp1,000.
“Indeed, such a study exists. At the time, we intended to raise the fare by Rp1,000. The proposed increase was between Rp1,000 and Rp2,000. But, it has not been implemented yet,” Risal explained in a statement in Jakarta on Thursday, September 12, 2024, as reported by Antara.
Despite this, Risal emphasized that the Transportation Ministry has not made a final decision regarding the fare increase for electric train tickets.
“As of now, it remains undecided whether the fare will increase or not. We will wait for the new cabinet (government) to take office. Then, we can assess the direction in which we will proceed,” Risal added.
The statement also addressed the proposed plan to provide train fare subsidies based on the ID Number (NIK) in 2025. Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi previously discussed the plan.
Previously, Budi Karya confirmed the ongoing study aimed at ensuring that all subsidized public transportation is utilized by those who truly qualify for such assistance. He said that all options under consideration remain a discourse and that no definitive decisions have been made.
The plan to implement subsidies for the Greater Jakarta Commuter Line based on NIK has sparked controversy. It originated from news reports citing data presented in Book II of the 2025 Draft State Budget, which was submitted to the House of Representatives (DPR) for discussion.
