Indonesia's Deputy Foreign Minister Visits Turkiye to Strengthen Strategic Ties

20 August 2024 11:53 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaIndonesian Deputy Foreign Minister Pahala Nugraha Mansury conducted a working visit to Ankara, Turkiye, from August 15-16, 2024. As influential emerging economies in the region, Indonesia and Turkiye aim to enhance cooperation in strategic sectors and advocate for the interests of developing countries (Global South).

As Special Envoy of Indonesia’s President, Pahala focused on strengthening strategic cooperation between the two nations. Established in 2022, the High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council (HLSC) serves as a platform for high-level dialogue to improve bilateral relations.

During his visit, Pahala met with Turkiye's Special Envoy Akif Cagatay Kilic to discuss preparations for the inaugural HLSC meeting, tentatively scheduled for late 2024 or early 2025. Areas of potential cooperation include the defense and defense industry, the Indonesia-Turkiye Comprehensive Economic and Trade Partnership (CEPA), energy, counter-terrorism, and parliamentary cooperation.

Pahala also met with Turkish Deputy Foreign Minister Burhanettin Duran to discuss bilateral relations, regional issues, particularly Turkiye's interest in strengthening ties with ASEAN, and the two countries' support for Palestine.

To bolster strategic cooperation, especially in the defense sector, Pahala engaged with Turkish Deputy Minister of Finance Osman Celik. They discussed efforts to secure funding and guarantees for defense equipment procurement and promote South-South and Triangular cooperation to support fellow developing countries.

Through this working visit, Indonesia and Turkiye seek to strengthen their partnership and realize their potential as emerging regional and global powers.
