Indonesian Defense Minister Prabowo Visits Turkiye, Meets President Erdogan

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto met with President of Turkiye Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara on Tuesday, July 30, 2024. The meeting was part of Prabowo's European working visit before the end of his term.
The President-elect for the 2024-2029 period was greeted with a state ceremony at the Turkish Palace upon arrival. He and President Erdogan held a private meeting afterward.
Prabowo said that the meeting aimed to strengthen the strategic defense and industrial partnership between Indonesia and Turkiye. He highlighted the two nations' roles as regional leaders in contributing to global peace.
“We must deepen this relationship to foster mutual trust,” Prabowo stated in a written statement on Wednesday, July 31, 2024.
He also expressed the desire to enhance military capabilities and expand defense industry cooperation between the two countries.
During the visit, Prabowo met with his Turkish counterpart Yasar Guler and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.
On Wednesday, July 24, 2024, he met with French President Emmanuel Macron to discuss potential areas of cooperation. On Monday, July 29, 2024, he met with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic for a similar discussion.
In addition to diplomatic meetings, Prabowo, who was accompanied by State-Owned Enterprises (SOE) Minister Erick Thohir who also serves as the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) Chairman and Youth and Sports Minister Dito Ariotedjo, met with FIFA President Gianni Infantino. He also met with International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach in Paris to discuss Indonesia's bid for the 2036 Olympics.
