TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Minister of Defense and President-elect Prabowo Subianto visited France at the tail-end of July for a working visit. One of Prabowo’s agendas in France was meeting the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach.
Prabowo's meeting with Thomas Bach occurred at the Hotel Du Collectionneur, Paris, on Saturday, July 27, 2024. Prabowo was accompanied by the Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) and the Chair of Indonesia’s Football Association PSSI Erick Thohir, and Minister of Youth and Sports Dito Ariotedjo.
In his Instagram post, Erick Thohir said the meeting with Thomas Bach discussed Indonesia's potential to host international-level sporting events. "Including the Olympics," said Erick, quoted from the Instagram account @erickthohir, on Monday, July 29, 2024.
Erick said Prabowo Subinto’s love for sports drove his aim to make Indonesia the host of world-class sporting events. "If there is a will, there will be a way," he said.
President Joko Widodo or Jokowi in 2022 conveyed that Indonesia was interested in hosting the 2036 Olympics, especially in the country’s new capital, Nusantara Capital City or IKN.
"On this occasion, I convey Indonesia's willingness and readiness to host the 2036 Olympics in IKN," said Jokowi.
