TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported a 5.7 magnitude earthquake shook the Banda Sea, Southeast Maluku Regency, at 09:47 p.m. WIB (Western Indonesia Time) on Monday, July 22, 2024.

Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Daryono, said the quake was due to intra-slab subduction activity in the Banda Sea.

"The epicenter of the earthquake is located in the sea, at a depth of 98 kilometers," he said in a written statement shortly after the earthquake, as reported by Antara,

The earthquake’s epicenter was located around 183 kilometers west of Tual City, Maluku, or 372 kilometers southeast of Ambon City. According to BMKG records, the 5.7 magnitude earthquake was felt in three areas in East Seram Regency, namely Teor, Wakate, and Gorom Island, with an intensity scale of III-IV MMI.

According to Daryono, this earthquake had a strike-slip movement that did not have the potential to cause a tsunami. BMKG also urged Maluku residents to remain vigilant and pay close attention to official information about the earthquake from the agency.

"Wait for the results of BMKG’s comprehensive analysis and don’t be influenced by unclarified issues," he said.
