TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Pope Francis landed at Jacksons International Airport, Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, on Friday evening, September 6, 2024. The Garuda Indonesia airplane with flight number GA 7780 carrying the Pope and his entourage landed at around 07:30 p.m. local time.
As many as 20 cannons were fired and marching band performances welcomed Pope Francis’ arrival. Billboard with Pope Francis’ picture and welcome flags are installed on the edge of the airport’s runway.
“Welcome to Papua New Guinea,” the banners and billboard read.
Several state officials, cardinals, and bishops greeted the Pope upon his arrival at the airport. The Pope was seen sitting under a tent in front of the plane before continuing his journey to the Apostolic Nunciature in a white car.
Similar to Indonesia, Catholics of Papua New Guinea enthusiastically awaited the Pope’s arrival. They stood at the roadside in the areas around the airport, waving their hands while some held up posters of Jesus.
Pope Francis will embark on an apostolic journey in Papua New Guinea until Monday, September 8, 2024. The Pope will then continue his journey to Timor Leste and Singapore before going back to the Vatican.
