TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An earthquake struck Malili in East Luwu, South Sulawesi, on Tuesday morning, September 3, 2024. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded the 4.1 magnitude quake at 07:26 a.m. local time or 06:26 a.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB).
The agency’s initial reports indicated that the quake was centered on land, 4 kilometers northeast of East Luwu, at a depth of 5 kilometers.
Malili experienced the strongest shaking, on scale III of the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI), which is equivalent to feeling a tremor inside a house as if a truck were passing by.
The Malili quake was the first seismic event felt today. On Monday, September 2, 2024, the BMKG recorded four perceptible earthquakes.
The first two quakes on Monday occurred in the early morning hours; one in East Kolaka, Southeast Sulawesi, and another in Melonguane, North Sulawesi.
The East Kolaka quake, centered on land, had a magnitude of 2.7 and a shaking intensity of II-III MMI. The Melonguane quake, centered at sea, had a magnitude of M5.1 and a shaking intensity of up to IV MMI, meaning it was felt by many people inside houses, causing doors and windows to creak.
The other two quakes shook the Aceh region: a 4.9-magnitude quake in Nagan Raya and a 4.7-magnitude quake in Pidie Jaya. Both were land-based quakes and produced shaking intensities of up to IV MMI.
According to the BMKG data, the Nagan Raya quake occurred at 07:39 a.m. WIB due to the activity of the Semangko Fault (Sumatra) in the Central Aceh Segment. The strongest shaking was felt in the Bener Meriah and Takengon areas.
The Pidie Jaya earthquake, which occurred at 08:51 p.m. WIB, was also a shallow quake triggered by the Semangko Fault in the Central Aceh Segment. The strongest shaking was recorded in the Mane area.
