TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Pope Francis concluded his apostolic visit to Indonesia on Friday, September 6, 2024. Following his departure from Jakarta, the Catholic leader will continue his journey to Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.
In a farewell ceremony at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, the Pope expressed his gratitude to Indonesia for the warm welcome he received. He also thanked the local authorities for their assistance during his visit.
The Pope announced his upcoming apostolic journey to Papua New Guinea, Timor Leste, and Singapore. He noted that his itinerary would involve passing through Indonesian airspace.
As he departed Indonesia aboard Garuda Indonesia, the Bishop of Rome expressed his fond memories of the country and offered his blessings to the Indonesian people. “I ask for abundant divine blessings for your country,” he said.
He is expected to arrive in Papua New Guinea at approximately 6:50 p.m. local time.
To ensure the Pope's safe departure, the Jakarta Metro Police deployed 1,165 personnel to provide security. “A total of 672 officers are stationed at the VIP room at Terminal 3 of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, while 493 personnel are assigned to secure the route from the Vatican Embassy to the airport,” said Senior Commissioner Ade Ary Syam Indradi, Head of Public Relations of Metro Jaya Police.
