TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - During the Eucharistic celebration, the Pope was seen wearing a white pluvial, or collared cape, adorned with Nusantara Cross ornaments on both sides of the front. This ornamentation was also applied to the mitre, the tall hat worn by Pope Francis, symbolizing spirituality and humility in serving the congregation.
The Nusantara Cross was also visible on the chasubles worn by bishops and concelebrating priests during the Mass.
According to various sources, the Nusantara Cross was created by combining universal religious symbols with Indonesia's rich cultural heritage.
The cross, with arms of equal length and a moline or anchor pattern, creates two distinctive eight-pointed curves, commonly used by followers of Saint Benedict and the Benedictine Order.
Indonesian cultural touches are visible on the body of the cross. Dayak motifs from Kalimantan represent the northern region, Sumba from East Nusa Tenggara symbolizes the south, Asmat from Papua represents the eastern end, and Batak from North Sumatra represents the western part of Indonesia.
In addition, unique Indonesian ornaments, including four Garuda wings inspired by the beauty of Javanese batik, decorate the spaces between the main arms of the cross. Meanwhile, floral patterns from Balinese weaving enhance the small central cross, creating harmony between the rich visual elements.
The Nusantara Cross was embroidered predominantly with gold thread, giving a luxurious impression, while incorporating other colors such as silver, brown, yellow, red, and white. This combination symbolizes the glory of Christ's Cross with the simplicity typical of Nusantara.
Pope Francis' vestments for leading the Eucharist at GBK were designed with the principle of "beautiful yet simple," in line with the liturgical renewal spirit emphasizing nobili simplicitate (noble simplicity).
The attire was specially commissioned by the Vatican Ambassador to Indonesia, Archbishop Piero Pioppo, and the Chairman of the Indonesian Bishops' Conference (KWI), Archbishop Antonius Subianto Bunjamin, OSC, from Bandung-based liturgical vestment creator, SangKris.
