2024 GIIAS: Visitors Flock to Chinese Electric Car Brands

22 July 2024 10:18 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaRows of Chinese-manufactured electric cars enlivened the 2024 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS). Tempo’s observation found that people flock to Chinese manufacturers’ stands such as Wuling, BYD, Chery, Neta, and Aion.

Of these brands, Wuling attracted many enthusiasts in its stand in Hall 8 of ICE BSD City. Wuling has released three electric car series thus far; Air EV, Binguo UV, and Cloud EV. The three contribute to half of Indonesia’s EV wholesale in the first quarter of 2024.

Meanwhile, the electric car manufacturer BYD launched a new model at GIIAS, namely the M6 model. This model is priced at a daily competitive price of Rp379 million.

The GWM manufacturer also exhibited GWM Tank 300 priced at Rp833.8 million per unit. This type of SUV has a competitor and a newcomer in Indonesia’s electric car scene, BAIC BJ40 Plus which is priced at Rp783 million.

Meanwhile, the Chery manufacturer introduced two newest series; Tiggo 8 with a special GIIAS price of Rp400 million and Omoda E5 for Rp419 million, down Rp70 million compared to the previous price list.

Gaikindo’s electric car sales noted that five Chinese manufacturers dominated the scene throughout the first semester of 2024.

Total wholesale sales of electric cars in Indonesia throughout the first semester of 2024 were recorded at 11,940 units. The top five brands all come from China, including Wuling, Chery, and SAIC Motor-affiliated MG.

Wuling Indonesia Marketing Operations Director Liu Yan explained that Chinese electric car manufacturers have a big opportunity to expand the market in line with the countries’ target of expanding electric car use.

A visitor named Linda Christianty stated that she was quite interested in the Chinese EV BYD for its bamboo curtain.

"I was still trying to figure out which one to pick, but after a discussion with my husband, we decided on BYD M6," said Linda to Tempo, on Sunday, July 21, 2024. This would be her second time purchasing an electric car, the first being Wuling Air EV.
