TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Non-active Supreme Court Justice Gazalba Saleh was sentenced to 15 years in prison and a fine of Rp1 billion, subsidiary to a substitute imprisonment of six months, and an additional penalty to pay a substitute of S$18,000 and Rp1,588,085,000 within one month after the verdict is read.
"That the defendant Gazalba Saleh be sentenced to 15 years imprisonment and a fine of Rp1 billion, with a substitute imprisonment of six months," Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) prosecutor Wawan Yunarwanto read out the verdict at the Corruption Court of the Central Jakarta District Court on September 5, 2024.
The aggravating factors in the charges against Gazalba are that he does not support the government's anti-corruption program, has damaged the public's trust in the Supreme Court, was unclear in providing information during the trial, and wanted to profit from the crime. Meanwhile, a factor that mitigates his charge is that he has never been convicted.
Gazalba Saleh was previously charged with accepting gratuities and laundering money worth Rp62.8 billion in processing cases at the Supreme Court (MA). One of the bribes was Rp650 million in kickbacks that he allegedly received together with lawyer Ahmad Riyadh in Surabaya.
Gazalba is also suspected of receiving S$18,000 or around Rp200 million in connection with the cassation case of Jawahirul Fuad. He is also suspected of receiving a sum of money in the form of rupiah and foreign currencies, which if totaled, would reach Rp62.8 billion.
The prosecutor said Gazalba Saleh committed money laundering by disguising the money he received by spending it on a number of assets, including the purchase of an Alphard car, foreign currencies, land and buildings in South Jakarta, gold, and paying off his close friend's mortgage. The total value of money laundering committed reached approximately Rp24 billion.
