Ministry Confirms No Indonesians Among Oman Shooting Victims

17 July 2024 06:19 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed on Tuesday afternoon, July 16, 2024, that no Indonesian citizens were among the victims of a shooting incident that occurred earlier that morning in the Al Wadi Al Kabir area of Oman. The shooting resulted in four fatalities.

The ministry's Directorate for the Protection of Indonesian Citizens and Legal Entities stated that the Indonesian Embassy in Muscat immediately contacted local authorities and the Indonesian community in Oman following the shooting. As of this publication, no reports indicate any Indonesian citizen casualties.

The Embassy urged Indonesians in Oman to remain vigilant, follow local authorities' instructions, and contact the Embassy hotline (+968 9600 0210) in case of emergencies.

The shooting, which took place near a mosque in the capital city of Muscat, sent shockwaves through Oman, which is known for its relative peace led by a sultanate. Omani police confirmed the incident via social media X on Tuesday morning, July 16, 2024. Social media footage captured a crowd chasing the shooter near the Imam Ali mosque, with shouts of "Oh, Hussein" audible in the background.

Omani authorities are currently investigating the incident. Details regarding the perpetrator, motive, and any arrests remain undisclosed. Police have assured the public that security measures are in place and the investigation is ongoing.

Shortly after the shooting incident, the Oman Blood Bank issued a plea on social media X, requesting a significant increase in blood reserves to aid the injured victims.
