TEMPO.CO, JakartaPT MRT Jakarta said an opportunity presents for the MRT project to expand to South Tangerang, with an emphasis on support from the local government.

"MRT is a regional-owned enterprise managed by the Jakarta Government, so it focuses on developing Jakarta’s infrastructure,” MRT Jakarta President Director Tuhiyat said on Thursday, July 11, 2024.

MRT Jakarta aimed to expand its routes to Banen, Cikarang, and South Tangerang, considering the necessary interconnection with these regions. “It really depends on said regions’ local governments,” he added.

The company also requires support from the Transportation Ministry as the planner. “MRT is ready to expand the project. Anytime. We’re ready to collaborate with the operators and others,” he said.

Tuhiyat said his side had discussed MRT expansion with former South Tangerang Mayor Airin Rachmi Diany and the Greater Jakarta Transportation Management Agency. However, the discussion was hampered by the ministry’s priority scale. "The key to all of this (expanding MRT routes) is financing," he said.

On the same occasion, PT MRT Jakarta Construction Director Weni Maulina said MRT Jakarta projects cannot be separated from the role and support of the government, namely funding. Weni said the government is exploring more creative funding alternatives to attract investors. "These regions do not have fiscal ability as high as Jakarta, but (the government) is searching for funding alternative options for them,” she said.
