TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) asked the government to form a task force to eradicate illegal imports in the wake of Chinese goods that flooded the Indonesian market.

Kadin’s Deputy General Chair Coordinator for Organization, Legal, and Communication Affairs Yukki Nugrahawan Hanafi said the government must thoroughly examine what kinds of products entering Indonesia and their entry points. Kadin believed the government must take firm action against products entering the country through illegal means.

"We recommend the government to form a task force to eradicate illegal imports and control illegally imported goods," said Yukki in a written statement on Wednesday, July 3, 2024.

Yukki said the government could invite Kadin and other business associations to participate in curbing illegal imports through the task force.

Kadin also asked the government to conduct an in-depth review of the Harmonized System (HS) Code that will be affected by the plan to raise import duties by up to 200 percent for imported products from China. Yukki said products that cannot be produced domestically and products with different specifications could be excluded from the affected HS Code. This way, the import duty will be precise and help boost export performance.

The government plans to raise import duties in response to Beijing’s dumping policy. Some affected goods include clothing, steel, textiles, and ceramics, which entered Indonesian markets with extremely low prices as they were unable to penetrate the Western markets.
