Australia, Indonesia Launch Research Collaboration for Sulawesi

30 May 2024 21:41 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Australia and Indonesia jointly introduced the Partnership for Australia Indonesia Research (PAIR), a bilateral research and university collaboration aimed at Sulawesi. The program awas launched on Thursday, May 30, 2024, by Penny Williams PSM, the Australian Ambassador to Indonesia, and Professor Faiz Syuaib, a senior representative from the Indonesian Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology.

PAIR Sulawesi is an initiative facilitated by the Australia Indonesia Centre (AIC), a consortium comprising leading research universities from both countries. This program builds upon the AIC's mission to promote people-to-people connections in the realms of science, technology, education, innovation, and culture. Monash University serves as the leading agency for the AIC, while Universitas Hasanuddin acts as the anchor institution for PAIR Sulawesi.

This innovative partnership marks a significant advancement in research cooperation between Australia and Indonesia, with both governments making equitable investments.

“I am pleased to launch this initiative which brings Australia and Indonesia together to address shared challenges. Our previous collaborations through PAIR South Sulawesi built a strong foundation for developing evidence-informed policies. Now, we are expanding operations across Sulawesi,” said Ambassador Williams.

The Indonesian Embassy in Australia, in a press release, stated that PAIR aims to bridge the gap between research and policy by bringing together researchers, policymakers, and community groups to enhance policy outcomes. Through PAIR, distinguished Australian and Indonesian researchers collaborate with governments to address common concerns, such as climate change and the development of renewable energy.

“This initiative will lay the foundation for the transfer of knowledge to policy. It will ensure that research conducted by Indonesian higher education institutions has a broader and more profound impact on society through local solutions to address local challenges,” said Professor Faiz Syuaib.
