TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo, also known as Jokowi, confirmed the temporary suspension of the increase in the Single Tuition Fee (UKT) for State Universities (PTN). He said that the government might consider implementing the increase next year.
“This remains a possibility. The Minister of Education will later enact a policy to initiate the price hike next year. So there will allow for a gradual adjustment, rather than an abrupt increase like now,” he said at Istora Senayan in Central Jakarta, on Monday, May 27.
“For now, the significant increase [in tuition fee] has been scrapped and will be regulated to be reduced,” he added.
He affirmed that the Ministry of Education would issue the regulations to annul the UKT increase.
Education Minister Nadiem Makarim announced earlier that this year’s UKT hike would be canceled after discussions with university chancellors and taking into account public demands.
This announcement came after a meeting with Jokowi at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Monday, May 27. The former CEO of Gojek admitted that some of the UKT hikes had caused concern.
The UKT at various campuses increased in line with the Regulation of Education Minister No. 2 of 2024 concerning the Standards of Higher Education Operational Cost (SSBOPT), sparking protests from many student elements across various regions.
