BMKG Logs Eight Aftershocks Post Java Sea Earthquake

22 March 2024 15:36 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded that there had been at least eight aftershocks following the Java Sea earthquake near Tuban, East Java, on Friday, March 22.

Daryono, head of the agency’s quake and tsunami center, said in Jakarta that the eight aftershocks occurred consecutively between 11:22 and 13:31 WIB (Western Indonesia Time).

“There are eight aftershocks, with the largest having a magnitude of 5.3 and the smallest having a magnitude of 3.2,” Daryono said as quoted from Antara on Friday.

The epicenter of the first quake, with a magnitude of 6.0, was detected in the sea, 132 kilometers northeast of Tuban, at a 10-kilometer depth. The aftershocks were recorded at 152 kilometers northeast of Rembang, Central Java; 153 kilometers northwest of Lamongan, East Java; 175 kilometers northwest of Surabaya, East Java; and 612 kilometers northeast of Jakarta.

The tremor was felt in Central Java (Bawean, Jepara, Kudus, Semarang, Blora Pekalongan), East Java (Tuban, Lamongan, Bojonegoro, Surabaya, Nganjuk, Pacitan, Trenggalek, Tulungagung, Sidoarjo, Madiun, Pasuruan, Malang), and Yogyakarta.

Especially in Tuban City, the agency confirmed that the shaking was felt for around 15 minutes, causing people in hospitals, including NU Hospital, to be evacuated outside the building.

Daryono called on the public not to panic as the earthquake did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami. The BMKG has also coordinated with the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) to monitor the affected regions.
