TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An earthquake hits the Java Sea on Friday morning, March 22, 2024. The Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) preliminary data recorded that the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.0 and occurred at 11:22 a.m. WIB (Western Indonesia Time).
The epicenter was located 132 kilometers northeast of Tuban, East Java at a 10-kilometer depth, classifying it as a shallow earthquake.
BMKG had immediately confirmed in its initial annoucement that the earthquake did not have the potential for a tsunami. "Be vigilant of aftershocks that may occur," said BMKG.
Currently, there is no further information by BMKG on the impact of this earthquake. However, the earthquake was strongly felt by residents in Surabaya and other regions. "The earthquake was strong, the chairs and cupboards shifted and everyone went out of the school building,” said Fitri, a teacher from Surabaya who experienced the earthquake.
