FIFA President Gianni Infantino Sends Messages to Indonesia Post Olympics Playoff Match

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The International Football Federation (FIFA) President Gianni Infantino delivered a message to Indonesian football fans, lauding them to be proud of the national team. He took to his Instagram to send the message following the 2024 Olympic playoff match between the Indonesian U-23 national team and Guinea in Paris, France, on Thursday evening, May 9.

“My message to everyone in the football-loving country of Indonesia is to be proud of your team and keep supporting them with the same passion as they are moving in the right direction,” Gianni said via his personal Instagram account @gianni_infantino, as quoted in Jakarta on Thursday.

Gianni also posted a photo of the Garuda Muda squad which was taken before the match. He said he had watched Shin Tae-yong's squad play live in Clairefontaine, Paris. 

According to him, the Indonesian team missed out on a historic qualification for the Olympic Games by a very narrow margin of 0-1. Gianni also thanked the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) led by Erick Thohir for their ‘fantastic work’.

“FIFA will keep supporting you on this path,” Gianni Infantino remarked.

Erick Thohir responded to the warm message in the comment section. “Thank you for the extraordinary attention and support from Mr. President, Gianni Infantino, who was attending the Indonesian U-23 national team playoff match.”

The PSSI president added that the progress made by the Indonesian football team would not have been possible without FIFA's trust and encouragement.
