TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - China's teen swimmer Pan Zhanle broke the world record for the 100 meters men's freestyle on Monday at the World Aquatics Championships in Doha, Qatar. The 19-year-old finished the event in 46.80 seconds, smashing the previous world record of 46.86 held by Romanian teenager David Popovici.
"It's an honor for me, and it is a motivation for both young and old swimmers. I believe I can go faster than today's time," Pan said as published on the World Aquatics Championships website.
Pan set the record during his leg in the 4x100m freestyle relay event where he competed alongside teammates Ji Xinjie, Zhang Zhanshuo and Wang Haoyu where they finished first in 3 minutes 11 seconds and claimed the gold for China, with Italy and the USA taking silver and bronze.
"I'm lucky to have awesome teammates and we did really well today. It's just the first day and I’ve been feeling very excited," he added. I'll keep working hard for the Paris Olympics," he said.
Pan is the first Chinese male to hold the world record in the event. He is now recorded as one of only five men in history who have completed the 100m freestyle under 47 seconds.
