TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) has issued a dynamic weather forecast for February 2024, a month marked by significant events, including the Chinese New Year on February 10 and the General Election on February 14. The BMKG emphasizes the importance of public awareness due to the predicted dynamic weather conditions.
The BMKG identified several atmospheric phenomena of note, including the activity of the Asian Monsoon, which is expected to increase rainfall across Central and Southern Indonesia. Equatorial waves are active around central and eastern Indonesia, contributing to rain cloud formation. Additionally, the strengthening of the Asian Monsoon winds is causing the formation of elongated wind patterns and convergences over areas including Sumatra, Java, and Kalimantan.
For the Chinese New Year celebrations on February 10, moderate to heavy rainfall is anticipated in the Bogor Regency and Bogor City areas from the afternoon to evening. Meanwhile, during the same period, light rain is expected in Jakarta, Tangerang Regency, South Tangerang, and Bekasi areas.
On the day of the General Election, February 14, the weather is forecasted to be generally cloudy in the morning and afternoon, with potential light rain in the Greater Jakarta area during the afternoon.
The BMKG has also highlighted potential weather challenges for aviation between February 10 and 15, 2024. A significant presence of Cumulonimbus Clouds (CB) with more than 75% spatial coverage is expected in several regions, including Riau, the southern Malacca Strait, and the Batam and Lingga Islands, among others.
Additionally, there is a forecast for medium to moderate wave potential (1.25 - 2.50 meters) during the same period, urging caution for maritime activities.
The BMKG urges the public and relevant authorities to prepare for the anticipated weather conditions by ensuring adequate infrastructure and environmental management to handle increased rainfall and potential hydrometeorological disasters. The agency advises the public to stay informed through their website, social media, mobile application, call center, or direct contact with local BMKG offices.
