TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - General Manager of the State Electricity Company (PLN) for East Java Distribution Unit Agus Kuswardoyo mentioned that the company has invested Rp11 billion to support the U-17 World Cup 2023 held at the Gelora Bung Tomo (GBT) Stadium in Surabaya.
"This is PLN's commitment to Indonesia and football enthusiasts that PLN will be all out in supporting the success of U-17 World Cup," Agus said in a press conference in Surabaya on Monday, November 13, 2023.
According to Agus, the invested fund was intended specifically for the stadium and additional equipment. "[The investment] is dedicated for GBT to establish a new feeder to supply [power] to the stadium," he said.
Since Indonesia was appointed as a host for the U-17 World Cup, Agus added, PLN immediately established a mapping to secure electricity. "Since this is an international event, we will conduct the highest bar of security," he said.
Specifically for the Gelora Bung Tomo Station, far before the sports event, PLN has evaluated the power supply in the stadium. After, PLN established new routes of power supply to the stadium to avoid being mixed with the power supply of PLN's general consumers.
"Being mixed with the general consumers will create a potential disruption to the [power supply] and it could impact the feeder," he said.
Agus expressed his gratefulness that the U-17 World Cup opening ceremony last Friday went smoothly without any electrical disruption. According to him, this success was attributable to preparedness and the intense coordination between PLN, FIFA, and the regional government that managed the venue.
The power supply in East Java is more than adequate to support the U-17 World Cup, Agus said. However, to anticipate the unexpected, PLN prepared three layers of protection, namely the GBT Express Feeder as the main supplier, with GH Tandono Feeder and Randu Padangan Feeder as emergency suppliers. The three feeders are also supported with uninterruptible power supply (UPS) and gensets.
