TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The upgrade and development project of Tanah Abang Station in Central Jakarta is currently underway, confirmed Risal Wasal, the Director General of Railways at the Transportation Ministry. The project, which is in collaboration with state-owned rail operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI), and the Jakarta Government, is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.
“We want to improve the service for passengers at Tanah Abang Station, both in terms of convenience, comfort, and accessibility,” Risal said in an official statement on Sunday, May 5.
As part of the project, Risal explained that a new station building and two new train lines will be constructed, increasing the existing four lines, with the station being built with a two-story main building covering an area of 12,000 square meters.
The station, which is connected to Southeast Asia's largest textile market, Tanah Abang Market, will be equipped with commercial buildings and supporting facilities, including facilities for the disabled. “With the addition of two new lanes, the headway, especially on the Serpong Line, can reach three minutes from the previous seven minutes,” he added.
The project will also add two more platforms to the initial two and improve intermodal integration facilities. As a result, he stated that passenger capacity would triple, “From 100,000 to 300,000 passengers per day.”
Risal explained that each stakeholder has a different scope in the development of Tanah Abang station. PT KAI, he said, was assigned to construct parking lots and electronic ticketing facilities and build a plaza and station yards, as well as intermodal facilities and canopies. Meanwhile, the Jakarta government has been tasked with widening road access and building intermodal integration facilities.
“The Transportation Ministry is building a new station building and railway, railway operating facilities, such as tracks and signaling, as well as a pedestrian bridge over the railway line,” he concluded.
