Indonesia Finishes Runners-up in 2024 Uber Cup; Sports Minister Lauds Players

6 May 2024 07:23 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Youth and Sports Minister Dito Ariotedjo lauded the prodigious performance of the women's badminton team at the 2024 Uber Cup. Gregoria Mariska Tunjung and friends finished as runners-up in the tournament after losing 3-0 to hosts China in the final on Sunday, May 5.

“Yes, we are proud and thankful for the performance of the women's badminton team that returned to the finals after 16 years,” Dito said on the ministry’s official website on Sunday.

Dito admitted that China was one of the strongest teams in this championship. Nevertheless, he remained proud of the Srikandi Merah Putih for their remarkable display of resistance, with Ester Nurumi Tri Wardoyo even causing a momentary upset against He Bing Jiao and other Chinese lineups.

“The opponent (China) is ranked above us. However, the Uber Indonesia team played well, was aggressive, and was full of enthusiasm. As a result, we finished runners-up, we appreciate this extraordinary struggle,” he added.

Seeing this achievement, he expressed his optimism that the future of Indonesian badminton looks exceedingly bright, with the country's young and talented players poised for greater success in the years to come.

“Initially the Uber (Indonesian) team was targeted for the semifinals. This means that they have exceeded their target. I think this is a good step for them in the future,” Dito remarked.

The Sports Minister stressed that the government would continue to provide unwavering support for Indonesian sports development. “We support them when they win, we still support them when they lose,” Dito concluded.
