TEMPO.CO, Surakarta, Central Java - The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) stated that Indonesia has a great potential in its human capital to contribute to the artificial intelligence (AI) technology development.

According to BRIN Steering Committee member Marsudi Wahyu Kisworo, the government, however, should do more to enhance the AI development ecosystem in Indonesia.

To this end, the government, for instance, needs to provide more incentives, and ensure the availability of digital and internet technology infrastructure, he said at a discussion agenda in Solo Technopark (STP) on Sunday, May 05, 2024.

"'Nonetheless, I believe that our human capital are capable of it," Kisworo stated.

He highlighted the contribution of many Indonesian scientists to the development of sciences abroad that reveals the capability of Indonesia's human capital in playing a part in global technology development.

"For instance, one of the inventors of the COVID-19 vaccine is an Indonesian who works overseas. (We should admit that) Indonesia's environment is currently not too attractive for them," he said.

Besides ensuring the appropriate research and development environment, Kisworo also urged the government to guarantee research funding and the intellectual property rights of the researchers.

"(Researchers) who create new works should have their intellectual property rights assured," the BRIN official emphasised.

He said that as the first step, BRIN is committed to facilitating Indonesian scientists to develop new technology.

"For instance, when a young scientist invented a new herbal medicine, instead of experimenting at an expensive laboratory, he or she can do it at a BRIN facility free of charge," Kisworo said.

Meanwhile, Kisworo encouraged STP to follow BRIN's steps to provide research facilities for young researchers in order to enable them to develop their ideas.

He also urged STP to follow the example of overseas technology incubation facilities in providing a platform for members of the younger generation.

"Have the STP facilitated a start-up company, initiated by young people to produce something? If yes, I believe STP has the potential to move to that direction," Kiswoto remarked.
