TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vice President-elect Gibran Rakabuming Raka supports Prabowo Subianto’s plan to form a presidential club. According to Gibran, the presidential club will unite former Indonesian leaders.
“I think it's a good (idea), to bring together former leaders, seniors, and elders," said Gibran when met by the media crew at the Solo DPRD Building, Central Java, after attending the Solo City DPRD plenary meeting, on Monday, May 6, 2024.
He said the existence of a Presidential Club could allow him and Prabowo, the president-elect, to at least get input from experienced former presidents. He also asked the general public to wait for the proper concept of the presidential club.
"What is clear is that this is a terrific proposal," he said.
When asked about his plan to meet the former president and Chair of PDI-P, Megawati Soekarnoputri, however, Gibran did not answer. He only said that his side would ask all relevant seniors for their input. “Yes, we will ask the seniors and experienced state leaders for their opinion. That is our consideration about the formation of a presidential club,” he said.
The Mayor of Solo added that asking for input regarding the cabinet and evaluation could come from people within or outside the Onward Coalition. "Input, evaluation, opinion, whatever it is, can come from people inside or outside the coalition, it’s no big deal," he said.
Prabowo's aim to form a presidential club was previously expressed by Prabowo's spokesman, Dahnil Anzar Simanjuntak. Going forward, the Presidential Club will become a platform for living former presidents of Indonesia to convene. Various parties welcomed the proposal, including President Jokowi who said that the meetings should be held every two days.
