TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Joko Widodo or Jokowi praised the national football team for its success in defeating Brunei Darussalam in the first leg of the first qualifying round for the 2026 World Cup in the Asian Zone. He said all the players gave their best throughout the match, which took place at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Thursday evening, October 12, 2023.
“Everyone did well. Football is about teamwork,” Jokowi said after watching the match at the stadium.
The Garuda squad managed to beat Brunei with a score of 6-0 in the first leg at home. The second leg will be played away at the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Stadium in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei, on Tuesday, October 17, 2023.
When asked if he had any input for the national team, the President said their performance was already good. However, he expected them to keep improving their games.
Jokowi particularly highlighted the entry of Ramadhan Sananta in the second half. For him, the striker changed the pattern of the game.
In last night's match, Dimas Drajad was the star of the Indonesian team's victory as he scored a hat-trick against Brunei. Ramadhan Sananta, a striker of the Persis Solo football club, added two goals and Rizky Ridho scored the other.
