TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) chairman Erick Thohir confirmed that President Joko Widodo or Jokowi will watch the football match between Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam in the first round of the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers to be held at the Gelora Bung Karno or GBK Stadium in Jakarta on Thursday, October 12.
“Pak President Joko Widodo has informed us that he will be watching the Indonesian national team live because for Pak President, football seems to be the number one show to watch. He will sit in the stands (west side) as usual. He wants to be close to the people watching the game. Hopefully, our team can give their best tomorrow,” Erick said when visiting the Garuda team in Jakarta on Wednesday.
The main squad will represent the Indonesian national team albeit, but without two players, Marselino Ferdinan and Rafael Struick, who are still recovering from injuries. “There will be no rotation of players in the team lineup, and I have prepared everything in the hope that we can score as many goals as possible at home,” the national team coach Shin Tae-Yong said.
Although the Garuda squad has a good record against Brunei in their last three matches, the South Korean coach is wary of Mario Rivera's counter-attacking strategy.
“I know the opponent will play defensively and look for counter-attacks. We don't want to concede any goals and we will try to resist that pattern of play,” Tae-Yong added.
In the last three matches against Brunei Darussalam, the Merah Putih team clinched all victories with a score of 5-0 in the trial match in 2012, 4-0 in the trial match in 2017, and 7-0 in the 2022 AFF Cup.
Today’s win is crucial for the Indonesian national team to advance to the second round of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup in the Asian Zone. The Indonesia vs Brunei Darussalam football match will take place today at 7 p.m. Jakarta time and will be broadcast on national television RCTI.
