TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) in cooperation with its industry partners is researching ways to develop multi-layered plastic suitable for recycling. The research is intended to reduce plastic waste issues.

"The research result will encourage economic activities based on multi-layered plastic waste management," said BRIN researcher Abdul Muis Hasibuan in Jakarta, on Thursday, August 3, 2023.

Abdul said that the development of the food and beverages industry, medicine, and various cleaning products has caused a surge in the multi-layered plastic demands. According to Abdul, transforming multi-layered plastic, perceived as unsuitable for recycling, to be recycle-friendly is part of an effort to improve environmental quality.

"The research cooperation (between BRIN and its partners) is necessary to identify the existing multi-layered plastic industry including the relation of downstream and upstream, to develop a circular economy based on the recyclable multi-layered plastic," said Abdur.

BRIN also analyzes the effect of recyclable multi-layered plastic on the economy, society, and environment, as well as creating scenarios for business model development. According to Abdur, the research is crucial for drafting a recommendation scheme on the recyclable multi-layered plastic development.

Plastic waste management is a prominent issue in Indonesia. According to Inaplas, around 65% of waste in Indonesia is plastic packaging or multi-layered plastic. Meanwhile, 90% of the multi-layered plastic waste is unsuitable for recycling.

On August 3, 2023, BRIN, PT Standardasi Sertifikasi Nasional, and PT Sendang Bumi Wastama signed a cooperation agreement concerning the research for multi-layered plastic-based circular economy system development.
