BNPB Holds ASEAN Disaster Response Exercise in Yogyakarta

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Agency for Disaster Countermeasure (BNPB) held ASEAN Regional Disaster Emergency Response Simulation Exercise or ARDEX 2023 in Yogyakarta on Tuesday, August 1, 2023. Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Cultural Affairs Muhadjir Effendy said the simulation and disaster education are necessary to realize sustainable resilience.
"To implement anticipatory actions involving all citizens through disaster education to raise awareness about disasters and to improve the ability in disaster management, strengthening the data and information management to realize a sustainable resilience," said the minister on Tuesday, August 1, 2023. Further, the simulations need to be conducted regularly to prevent confusion while facing a disaster.
Meanwhile, the Head of BNPB Lieutenant General Suharyanto said that ARDEX 2023 was participated by people from around ASEAN countries. "In total, there are 960 participants from Indonesia, consisting of ministry, institutions, regional government representatives, and disaster management activists. As well as 180 participants from 10 ASEAN state members and the ASEAN Secretariat."
ARDEX is part of the effort to prepare disaster management and boost the Pentahelix collaboration. In mitigating disasters, ARDEX provides cross-sectors, cross-system, cross-scale, and cross-limitation efforts through disaster management simulation.
"Through this event, Indonesia and its neighboring countries in ASEAN could share and transfer disaster knowledge and technology and cultural practices concerning disaster management," said Suharyanto.
