5M Earthquake Shakes Indonesia's Maluku

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said a 5-magnitude earthquake hit the southwest of South West Maluku Regency, Maluku on Tuesday, August 1, 2023, at 19:13 p.m. According to the Head of Earthquake and Tsunami Center of BMKG Daryono, the earthquake was caused by a subduction in the Banda Sea.
The quake was located in the ocean, 61 kilometers northeast of the South West Maluku Regency, Maluku, at 109 kilometers depth. It was caused by an oblique thrust fault movement, said BMKG.
According to the shock estimation map, the earthquake shook Damer, South West Maluku with a III MMI intensity scale. The vibrations were felt inside the house, similar to a truck passing by. Meanwhile, in Moa Lakor, the tremors were felt inside the house at the level of II-III MMI scale. No casualties are reported.
The meteorology agency has not issued a warning for a potential tsunami. Until 19:25 p.m., BMKG monitoring has not recorded any aftershocks.
Daryono urged the citizens to remain calm and vigilant. He also asked people to avoid crumbling and damaged buildings caused by the earthquake.
