Jakarta Councillor Deems WFH More Effective than Office Hours Division to Ease Traffic

13 July 2023 23:08 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaJakarta Regional Legislative Council (DPRD) member August Hamonangan opined that the work-from-home or WFH policy is more effective in reducing the city’s perennial traffic congestion than the office-hours division policy.

“WFH, which is implemented during the pandemic, is proven to be able to overcome traffic jams,” August said in Jakarta, Thursday, July 13, 2023, as quoted from Antara.

Not only does lessen gridlocks, but WFH policy also improves the city’s air quality. It would also support Jakarta to be a smart city.

August also argued that it is necessary to improve the quality and public transportation to reduce the use of private vehicles, which is one of the main causes of traffic density.

The Council’s Commission A member, Gembong Warsono, also supported the provincial government's efforts to enhance the quality of public transportation in dealing with traffic jams and encourage the city’s civil servants (ASN) to use mass transport.

“We push ASN to be the motor and driving force [of the use of public transport] among residents,” Gembong said.

On Monday, July 10, Jakarta Transportation Agency head Syafrin Liputo said the city administration would not oblige private companies to comply with the office hours division policy as it would only serve as a recommendation.

The Jakarta Provincial Government planned to launch a trial of the office hours division policy for the city’s officials given their large number. Workers within the city administration will later have different office start times, namely 8 a.m. and 10 a.m.
