TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Head of the Jakarta Transportation Agency Syafrin Liputo on Thursday insisted that the city administration cannot arbitrarily force corporations to implement ‘work from home’ (WFH) or remote working for its employees in an attempt to scale down traffic congestion.
One of the main reasons is Jakarta’s status as a megapolitan city and capital city surrounded by satellite cities joined in Greater Jakarta.
“Jakarta is the country’s capital city and is a megapolitan surrounded by Greater Jakarta, which means the work hours cannot be determined solely by the city’s administration,” said Syafrin at the Jakarta Legislative Council (DPRD) headquarters on February 15.
Due to this legal constraint, the administration believes it is best to leave work hours under each corporation’s independent supervision. “We leave it to each and every entity.”
However, he did give an example of the city’s mandated work hour that starts from 07:30 (WIB) last year and 08:00 this year according to the Governor’s decree. He hopes a larger portion of companies with headquarters in the capital to follow suit.
“There are already adjustments which we hope can be followed by other stakeholders,” said the Jakarta Transportation Agency head.
