TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI which creates ChatGPT, talked about a large language model (LLM) in artificial intelligence technology that can generate new ideas or discoveries for the progress of human knowledge during a discussion dubbed the 'Conversation with Sam Altman' on Wednesday, June 14.
The event was held in Hotel Indonesia, Jakarta, and was organized by the Indonesian-based Artificial Intelligence Industry Research and Innovation Collaboration or KORIKA and GDP Venture.
“The system that can discover new ideas and help us make faster scientific progress, I think personally, is what I’m most excited to see with AI,” Sam said during the event.
Sam believed that what needs to be improved from the large language model is the ability to contribute to the advancement of science.
“We ask the question of ‘what is the thing that is more valuable for the world that this large language model cannot do?’ and there are different opinions to that but the one that I believe is [LLM] contributes to new scientific knowledge to human society,” he remarked.
Sam said he envisioned LLM that could solve diverse problems faced by humans, such as overcoming climate change, figuring out better cooperation between nations, finding cures for all diseases, and discovering optimal methods for student learning.
However, he assessed that a new research paradigm is thus needed. “I think it requires a new research paradigm on top of this LLM.”
The research paradigm he referred to is how an LLM can learn information from various sources and be able to think when facing a problem. So, from the results of the learning and thinking process, the system can come up with new ideas that did not already exist as solutions.
“I think this is the next paradigm so we need to teach our models to do that,” Sam Altman concluded.
