TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Astronomers are set to collectively observe the April 20 solar eclipse, which will also be observable in Indonesia. The community is currently hunting for the best observation locations in a wide array of regions, especially those that will be crossed by the total solar eclipse.
"Some have chosen Biak as an observation location," said Avivah Yamani, an astronomist from the Langit Selatan community in Bandung, on Wednesday, April 12.
The community, said Avivah, is collaborating with the Biak Numfor Regency Government in Papua to hold a Solar Eclipse Festival on the day of the astronomical event. In addition, Biak is also the choice of location for the Imah Noong astronomy community in Bandung, as well as observers from the Jakarta Planetarium and researchers from the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN).
Amateur astronomers from the Sumatra Institute of Technology will reportedly settle at Timor Leste as their observation area while a team from the Bosscha observatory has chosen to observe the eclipse at Kisar Island in Maluku.
On April 20th there will be a total and partial solar eclipse, depending on the trajectory. In Indonesia, the total solar eclipse will only cross a dozen areas in the eastern region that are spread over Kisar Island, Maopora Island, the western tip of Manaoka Island, the Oeta region in the Watubela Islands, Antalisa, the area in the Papuan bird's neck, Roswar, Num Island, Roon Island, and Biak.
"Outside that area, the solar eclipse only occurs partially," Avivah said.
