TEMPO.CO, Bandung - Several astronomical phenomena will take place in April this year and some of them are the solar eclipse in Indonesia on April 20th and the Lyrid meteor shower. Avivah Yamani, the Langit Selatan community astronomer in Bandung, asserted that April is a special month because observers in Indonesia can witness a total and partial solar eclipse.
"The conjunction event during this solar eclipse also marks the observation of the new moon of Shawwal," she said, Monday, April 3.
Avivah said the first season of the 2023 eclipse begins with a hybrid solar eclipse, which is a combination of an annular solar eclipse and a total solar eclipse. The hybrid solar eclipse will begin with an annular eclipse over the Indian Ocean and continue moving north toward Australia.
Before reaching Australia, that phenomenon will be replaced by a total solar eclipse that will have a trajectory passing through Exmouth in Western Australia, Viqueque and Lautem in Timor Leste, Kisar Island and Maopora Island in Southwest Maluku, the Watubela Islands in Central Maluku, parts of West Papua and Biak in Papua.
There will also be the Lyrid meteor shower, which originates from the dust tail of Comet Thatcher C/1861 G1. Taking place between April 15-29, with peak time on April 23. Observations of the meteor shower can only be made after the Constellation Lyra rises at 22.08 Western Indonesia Time (WIB) in the northeast.
"Because the Moon has set before the Lyra constellation rises, the best time for observations starts at midnight," she said.
