West Papua's Ransiki Hit by 5.3 M Earthquake

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) announced a 5.3 magnitude earthquake had hit the West Papua region of Ransiki at 02:38 local time (WIT). According to the agency, the quake's epicenter was only 1-kilometer southwest of Ransiki.
The quake's hypocenter of 20 kilometers reportedly may not cause a tsunami.
A series of earthquakes previously struck the region and after the earthquake that hit the city of Jayapura on January 2, several aftershocks followed.
On Thursday, February 9, the intensity of the earthquake reached 5.4 magnitude. The intensity of the shock from the earthquake this afternoon was measured by BMKG to the V MMI scale.
The Jayapura City administration reported that roughly 2,500 people have been evacuated to at least 15 refugee camps following the first earthquake. The majority are still hesitant to return to their homes as they fear aftershocks.
