Garut BPBD Inspecting Impact of Last Night's M4.4 Earthquake

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Garut Regency, West Java is still inspecting the areas affected by last night's earthquake. According to preliminary reports the earthquake that struck before midnight did not cause any casualties or substantial damages.
According to the BMKG's measurements, the strength of the earthquake was M4.3. They updated the report to magnitude 4,4. It was a shallow earthquake with a scale of IV MMI.
"The check was carried out by the chiefs of each neighborhood (kecamatan). Hopefully there are no unwanted findings," BPBD Garut acting chief Satria Budi said in a press release from the regency's Communication and Information Service, Thursday 2 February.
Satria said that the earthquake was quite strong as felt by the people in Garut Kota, Pasirwangi, Cisurupan, Bayongbong, and Samarang. Some residents were even forced to run out of their homes, as happened in the Malayu housing complex in Tarogong Kaler District.
Satria asked the public to remain calm while waiting for more updates and information from the BMKG. "The BMKG monitoring results have not shown any aftershock activity," he added.
