TEMPO.CO, JakartaYet another high-magnitude earthquake struck eastern regions of Indonesia. Today, January 18, a 7.1-magnitude quake jolted North Sulawesi at 13:06:14 western Indonesian time (WIB).

According to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency’s (BMKG) initial report, the quake was centered at 2.80 degrees north longitude and 127.11 degrees east latitude, or 141 kilometers southeast Melonguane, North Sulawesi, at a depth of 64 kilometers. The agency confirmed that it did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami.

Residents in Sofifi, Manado, and Ternate reported the shaking on the agency’s social media.

Earlier this morning, Teluk Tomini, Bone Bolango, Gorontalo Province was jolted by a tectonic quake. “The BMKG’s analysis shows its updated parameter at 6.1 magnitudes,” said the agency’s head of the quake and tsunami center Daryono on Wednesday.
