TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The solstice is the astronomical event that happens twice a year in June and December, specifically on the dates between 20-21, which refers to the sun’s position that appears to reach its most northerly or southerly excursion relative to the celestial equator on the celestial sphere.
LAPAN (National Aeronautics and Space Institute) assures the public that this phenomenon is harmless and is a common event as the solstice is when the earth’s northern hemisphere is tilted and closer to the sun the solar radiation emitted by the earth is greater and lasts longer. As a result, the Northern hemisphere experiences shorter daylight hours than the Southern hemisphere.
Citing Lapan’s website edukasi.sains.lapan.go.id, the following are countries that experience daylight less than 6 hours due to this phenomenon:
Helsinki (Finland): 5.85 hours
Anchorage (Alaska, United States): 5.5 hours
Kep. Faroe (Denmark): 5.15 hours
Fairbank (Alaska, United States): 3.75 hours
Nuuk (Greenland): 3.75 hours
Reykjavik (Iceland): 3.75 hours
Oulu (Finland): 3.65 hours
Lulea (Sweden): 3.2 hours
As there are some countries experiencing shorter day time, another part experiences a longer period that lasts more than 12 hours due to the solstice which includes:
Argentina/Chile: 17.25 hours
Malvinas/Falkland Islands (Argentina): 16.7 hours
Tasmania (Australia): 15.25 hours
Melbourne (Australia): 14.8 hours
Cape of Good Hope (Rep. South Africa): 14.45 hours
Perth (Australia): 14.45 hours
Madagascar (Africa): 13.3 hours
Kupang (Indonesia): 12.75 hours
Java Island (Indonesia): 12.55-12.45 hours
