Mount Semeru Erupts; PVMBG Explains Main Difference with 2021 Eruption

6 December 2022 13:11 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The eruption of Mount Semeru on Sunday, December 4, happened one exact year after the previous major eruption which created a gigantic volcanic ash cloud and was also spread across a wider area.

The Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) said that the similarities between the latest and last year’s eruption have no correlation and are merely a “Coincidence,” said PVMBG volcano coordinator Oktory Prambada on December 5.

Oktory said that the escalation of Mount Semeru's activity this year began with hot clouds falling in the early morning which is different from what happened in 2021. "Yesterday was in installments, not a single event like 2021. The damage is not as big as in 2021."

The volcanic activities happened in steps from 02:46 to the afternoon at 17:00 WIB. Unlike the eruption that happened the year before, which took place all at once. "[Last year] was destructive. Now, the damages are only in the valleys" said Oktory.
