Meta Apologizes for WhatsApp Global Outage

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Messaging application WhatsApp has back online at around 16:00 Jakarta time, Tuesday, October 25, 2022, after users were not able to access the service for more than 1 hour. 

“We know people had trouble sending messages on WhatsApp today. We have fixed the issue and apologize for any inconvenience,” a spokesperson for WhatsApp parent company Meta Platforms said.

For more than an hour, users switched to other messaging apps, such as Telegram which has seen a spike in user numbers as WhatsApp has been down. Many netizens complained about the outage on social media platforms including Twitter. Topics about WhatsApp and WA Down were among the most popular.

WhatsApp users in Indonesia complained that they could not send or receive messages on Tuesday afternoon, October 25, 2022. Based on the DownDetector page, the peak of reports of access problems occurred at 14:28 Jakarta time with 9,144 complaints reported.

The app down was also reported in other countries such as India by 11,000 users, the United Kingdom by 68,000 users, and Singapore by 19,000 users. Some other countries including Malaysia, Germany, Brunei, UAE, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and Nigeria reported the problem, as well.

However, other services from Meta, such as Instagram and Facebook, are normally accessible by users in Indonesia.
