TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - National Development Planning Minister or Bappenas Head Suharso Monoarfa said the new capital of Indonesia relocated from Jakarta to Penajam Paser Utara, East Kalimantan Province will be a province-level area.

“It will be then called Otorita. Otorita is the regional government at the provincial level, where the state capital is held,” said Suharso when met at his office, Tuesday, January 25.

According to him, it will be similar to establishing a new province in which the new capital will be called Nusantara. The government has set the area to reach 256,000 hectares.

The new capital will be led by a person directly elected by the president for the first period. “Because there is a representation from the DPR (House of Representatives), we ask for [the election of the head] to be consulted with the DPR for the next period,” Suharso added.

The capital head, he went on, has the task of overseeing preparations for the construction of the new capital as well as organizing the government. In line with that, the leader must ensure that the people there obtain the right to a decent life.

The government planned to start the construction project of the new capital city after the regulation is enacted. The new capital is targeted for completion in 2045, but the first phase of the construction of the central government core area (KIPP) is targeted to finish in 2024.
