TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Education, Culture, and Technology Ministry Nadiem Makarim in early September introduced regulation No.30/2021 overseeing the prevention and handling of sexual violence within university environment.
The Education Minister Regulation’s Article 5 explains that sexual violence encompasses actions that are committed verbally, non-physical, physical, and/or committed via information and communication technology.
Article 10 mandates universities to correctly handle cases by accompanying and providing protection toward victims, imposing administrative sanctions, and helping victims recover.
Article 13-19 oversees the administrative sanctions for perpetrators who have been proven to have committed sexual violence. Sanctions range from written warnings, forced to make written apologies in internal publication or mass media, up to temporary termination from their rights as students.
The hardest administrative punishment for sexual violence perpetrators is a permanent termination as university student or academic teacher. The Minister’s Regulation also requires universities and colleges to establish an internal task force to handle the issue.
