TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi is scheduled to open the National Sports Week or PON in Papua on October 2, 2021. This news was revealed by Youth and Sports Minister Zainudin Amali yesterday.
"On October 2, God willing, the President is scheduled to open PON," Amali told Tempo, Tuesday, September 21.
Menpora said that Papua is ready to hold PON. For that, he said, there is no need for excessive public concerns.
"First of all Papua is ready to hold the PON. To the Papuan people, this is pride and dignity for them, and so they are determined to make [the event] a success, even though there are political differences from their views internally," the minister said.
PON Papua will be held from October 2 to 15. The quadrennial multi-sports event will see national athletes competing in 37 branches. Matches will be held in four clusters: Jayapura City, Jayapura Regency, Mimika Regency, and Merauke.
