Indonesian Defense Orders FREMM Frigates from Italy

12 June 2021 11:20 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Italian shipbuilding company, Fincantieri, on Friday, June 11, has reportedly signed a contract with the Indonesian Defense Ministry to procure six class multipurpose FREMM frigates, the modernization, and sales of two Maestrale-class frigates along with its logistics.

In total, there are eight used Italian navy combat vessels that the Indonesian government purchased.

Fincantieri will also become the main contractor in the vessel procurement and also opened the possibility to establish a partnership with Indonesia’s state-owned shipbuilder PT PAL.

In a statement released on Thursday, June 10, Fincantieri said that in addition to the FREMM sales, the contract also covered the refurbishment and sale to Indonesia of two Maestrale-class frigates which are due to be retired from service by the Italian navy.

“The acquisition of an order of this magnitude allows Fincantieri to also assume global leadership in the surface ships sector,” CEO Giuseppe Bono said in the statement.

Tempo continues to confirm the news to the Indoneian Defense Ministry and stakeholders involved in the partnership.
