TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State-owned lender Bank Mandiri said it will block magnetic strip debit cards starting tomorrow, June 1. Customers who have not changed their cards to chip-based cards with an expiration date of 2023-2025 will immediately be blocked.
Quoted from its official page on Monday, May 31, Bank Mandiri said it had started blocking magnetic strip debit cards that have an expiry date of 2021-2022 beginning April 1. Customers are thus urged to change their cards for a better experience in transactions.
“Customers who are still using Mandiri magnetic strip debit cards are expected to immediately change the card to chip-based cards before the blocking date begins,” said the company announcement.
If customers have not replaced their cards with chip technology, their cards will be permanently blocked and cannot be used for any transactions. They are suggested to immediately visit the nearest branch office to obtain a card replacement.
The conversion program of magnetic strip-based cards to chip-based ones was to comply with Bank Indonesia’s (BI) directives to solely provide safety in transactions using debit cards. Cards with chip technology could reduce the risk of theft of customer data and skimming practices.
